Title: Indirect Questioning Techniques for Sensitive Surveys: Evidence from Taiwan
Abstract
Sensitive survey questions are prone to social desirability bias (SDB), leading to misreporting under direct questioning (DQ). This study evaluates indirect questioning techniques (IQTs), including the original and refined Cheating Detection Triangular Model (CDTRM) and the Unrelated Question Model with a cheating extension (UQMC), using data from Taiwan on death penalty attitudes and sensitive sexual behaviors. Compared to DQ, IQTs yield higher prevalence estimates, suggesting reduced SDB. The refined CDTRM shows improved robustness to respondent comprehension and attentiveness, while UQMC may overestimate in highly sensitive contexts. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for both SDB and noncompliance in sensitive survey measurement.
